Answer

Just to clarify, the instrument pack/ guage is making a squealing sound, and you want that to go away. Was the noise there before the alternator replacement?

The noise is under the hood. The Tach works intermittently. When it works no noise when iut stops there is a sqeaking/squilling noise. Noise was there before and after replacement of alternator.

Answer

The alternator is the tachometer output, and is hardwired directly to the instrument pack. I think you need to verify the wiring to the alt to instrument pack is good, and then if it is you may need a new instrument pack. If I remember right, the wire from the alternator is a white and grey wire.

It sounds like a cable spinning, not catching. I can be driving w tach not working w squealing noise and come to a stop then take off and tach starts to work. sqealing then stops. sound not coming from instrument panel. ?????? Is there a tach drive to the transmission or cam shaft???

Answer

No, The tachometer is electric only, and comes only from the alternator. The speedometer is also electric. The electric motors operate the actual needle. I bet something else that the belt attaches to is seizing up, and the belt then slips. If the belt slips the alternator doesnt turn, and the tach stops. Remove the belt, and rotate everything that it drives. I bet something like the water pump, or power steering pump is seizing intermittantly.

I sometimes hear a faint hissing sound at a stop light as if steam is dissapating. Does that sound like water pump going out? I have replaced alterantor and ac compressor and tension pulley.??

Answer

That could be. If you remove the belt, it should feel really smooth. If it feel notchy or rough. I would think it would be a good idea to replace that anyway, before it does fail.

The temp. gauge stays on cold never gets hot. Does that also indicate problem w/ water pump? or Is this a seperate problem or do you think its connected. Heat does work, however.

Accepted Answer

I would say that you should replace the pump. It could be that the coolant just isnt circulating well. It's a smart next step.
