Question

my 7 month old weimaraner was spayed friday afternoon, she seems excitable now, i put her in the laundry room where she is kenneled, nothing in their but water bowl, washer and dryer, nothing for her to get into, fihished floors, when i let her out after dinner I found large droplets of blood on the white tile floor. I made her lay down and looked at the incision it looks fine, she still has a swollen stomach and I saw some blood around her vulva, I checked her anus it was fine, clean no swelling or discharge from their. I called the humane society where she was fixed they are closed untill morning. Is it normal for large breed dogs to have a bloody discharge after being fixed or is it more likely she has hurt herself somehow and is having internal bleeding.

Bibi was fixed on friday afternoon, today is Monday night. she has been excitetable all day and have a hard time keeping her calm. she jumped off the bed a bit hard ealier today and cried out, laid down for a few moments then got up and went about her jolly way. This eve I put her in the back room where she is normally kenneled so we could eat dinner, she is driving me nuts all day with her excitability, when i let her out I found blood on the floor, about 4 large droplets and some little ones. I checked the incision it is still closed, her belly still looks a bit swollen and their was blood stain on her vulva. I checked her anus it was not bleeding or dirty. Is it normal for some blood discharge to occur on large breed dogs? Is it more likely she has hurt herself and has internal bleeding? Why is she so nuts today. I fed her normal amount of her food and she is drinking normal.

Accepted Answer

If you've been keeping her quiet she may be overly excitable because she was feeling better.

While a small amount of bleeding from the vulva is sometimes seen after a spay the fact that she cried when jumping off the bed (she really should not be allowed jumping for 10 days) may indicate she pulled an internal stitch and is bleeding from that. I'm guessing there was no blood on the bed so the bleeding started after the leap and cry.

I'd be concerned if she keeps bleeding a lot and here are some general things to check -

If your dog has a rectal temp over 103.5F (normal is 100.5-102.5 Fahrenheit or 38 - 39.2 Celsius ), has gums or tongue that look white, blue, gray or yellow tinted where they are normally pink, has a slow color refill if you press on a pink area of gum or tongue, is having difficulty breathing, or is becoming more lethargic and non responsive to you as time goes on, then you may want to get the dog in to see an emergency vet if one is available in your area.

Otherwise you may want to see/call your treating vet first thing when they open.

Hope this helps you!
