Info Request

what did they do when they "rebuilt it" ?

What caused the original problem?

Are you sure the grinding is in the engine or could it be in the outdrive?

They redid the cylinders and checked the rest. I dont know what caused it . I was out on the water and it just started. I just had the drive shaft replaced. It sounds like it is coming from the engine.

Answer

OK, well if you are sure it is in the engine I would start by checking the oil, look for metal fillings, water or a burnt smell. You can also remove the oil filter and check for fillings.

Does the noise change any if you are turning the boat? The reason I ask is it could be the universals on the driveshaft.

I will check for fileings. What would that mean? The sound doesnt change when turning.

Answer

Fillings or metal in the oil would mean you have a bearing out that would explain the noise.

I just looked and I can not find any metal shavings. The rebuilders did check bearings and said it was fine. Could it be the rods?

Answer

No, If you had a broken rod the engine probably would be locked up. I would try checking the fluid in the gearcase. Remove the bottom plug and inspect the oil, let me know what you find.

Hi Dave, I just double checked and it appears that the further I turn to starboard the worse it gets. Should I still pull the oil pan plug to check the oil? Hugh

Answer

Yes Check the oil. But I believe you have one of two problems or maybe both. Either your universal joints on the driveshaft are bad or the gimball bearing that supports the driveshaft in the intermediate housing are bad. You will need to remove the gearcase to inspect.

Dave The oil in the oil pan is fine. The U joints were replaced but not the gimball bearings. If would have been nice if the marina would have mentioned that the bearing should also be replaced. Any further thoughts on this?. Any tips on replacing the bearing? Thanks Hugh

Accepted Answer

Not that hard to do Hugh, but some special tools are required to do it correctly. If done incorrectly the bearing will go right back out or have damage done to the coupler.
