Question

My ferret is 2 years old and started coughing 3 days ago. She is eating and drinking and her bowl movements are normal. She is not as active as usual and seems to be sleeping quite a bit. Is there anything we can give her or does she need to see a vet?

Answer

Hello,

Since your ferret is eating well and behaving normally, this may be something minor such as a respiratory infection. However, such minor conditions can quickly turn serious if they aren't treated, and coughiing can indicate more seriosu conditions as well. Pneumonia and tumors in the lungs can both produce coughing. A respiratory infection can lead to pneumonia. Your ferret does need to be examined by a vet who can accurately diagnose the problem and provide proper treatment. This link will take you to a directory of ferret vets:

what medication would they prescribe for her

Accepted Answer

What they would prescribe depends on what is wrong. For a respiratory infection, they might give Baytril, but each vet has preferences in the antibiotics they use.
