Question

Is it normal to have suffered so much pain and bleeding when having a pessary inserted?? Or is it normal to start with the very largest pessary and work down 4 sizes to reach my size which was the smallest one. I also didn't realize it was needing to be removed at all. I wan't to know if they are all that painful?? I have a rod in my spine and could never remove it for cleaning. I have incontinance and prolapst vagina. My regular Dr. won't advise me to have any surgery as I have a bad heart. What can I do? I won't go back to have it inserted as I was just fitted.

Answer

Hello,

NO, it is not normal to have so much pain, bleeding, etc.... YOU should start with the smallest one possible - NOT the largest one. Yes, it should be removed daily to clean, but some of my patients come in weekly for it to be removed and cleaned. Also, are you sexually active, because if not, there is a procedure called a LeFort procedure that can help you tremendously and the procedure can be done under conscious sedation, not full anesthesia.

TELL ME ABOUT THE LEFORT YOU MENTIONED AND SHOULD I JUST CALL MY DR. AND TELL HER NOT TO GO AHEAD WITH THE ORDERING AS I WILL NEVER GO BACK TO HER ANYWAY?

Accepted Answer

Sure, stop the ordering.
The Lefort procedure is a method that stops vaginal prolapse permanently as this closes off your vagina permanently hence making sure your uterus/cervix no longer can descend. I usually ONLY do this procedure on women who can not tolerated full general anesthesia AND no longer are sexually active because of the permanent closure of the vagina. However, you will still be able to urinate. The procedure can be done under general anesthesia, or under conscious sedation. I hope this helps, please take care. However, if you can handle general hysterectomy - doing a hysterectomy with possible bladder lift with a sling might be better suited for you. I hope this helps, please take care.
