Question

why is it that my girl friend gets fevers so often? she goes to the chiropractor and sometimes it fixes the fever??? weird. he cracks her neck and back and usually it releases something and she's all better soon after. ???? I'm so confused about what is causing this. Also she said she had them as a child, but I already know that's common and why. any ideas?

Answer

Unfortunately, it's going to be impossible to answer the question why your girlfriend gets fevers so often.

However, one thing for certain -- the chiropractic manipulation of her neck has absolutely no effect on her fever. There is nothing that is "released" with this manipulation of the neck that reduces or cures fever, so you should get that association out of your mind.

If there are indeed persistent fevers -- further evaluation of her, and bloodwork would be helpful in evaluating for other potential causes, such as infection, inflammatory disorders, autoimmune disorders, and other more rare conditions of periodic fevers.

But certainly -- if she is spending money on the chiropractor because this is "fixing" her fevers -- she needs to save her money to try and figure out what really is going on.

I realize that a chiropractor can't fix a fever, but she says for the past 2 years it has worked. I kind of think maybe stress or overexertion maybe causing a fever. does this make any sense? she is always stressed with work and fans crowding and taking pictures. what kind of blood test should she have done? we are in japan and the JP doctors come up with the most retarded answers (eating too much meat). hahaha

Accepted Answer

Well, things like:

Blood count
electrolytes
thyroid hormone

can be useful in the initial evaluation.

ESR
CRP

are general markers for inflammation.

Further testing such as:

rheumatoid factor
antinuclear antibodies

and others can look for autoimmune conditions

Chest xray can be helpful if a lung cause is suspected.

And other tests can be done to help narrow the evaluation, like blood cultures, HIV tests, muscle enzymes, CT scans, etc.
