Question

I am feeding a stray cat it scratches continuously. It has scratched itself raw. I feel rough spots on its skin. What could this be and how can I help it. I feel sorry for it. I would take it to the vet, but, I am currently unemployed and can't afford to right now.

Answer

Hi, thanks for the question

It sounds as if your new little fur friend is suffering from flea infestation.

You can try bathing with dawn dish soap.

You can also purchase flea prevention such as Advantge from your vet with out taking the pet,

I do not recommand over the counter flea prevention foe cats as the often have adverse reactions especially if you are not sure of the exact weight.

Hope this has helped an thank you for taking care of a homeless friend.

You think this is just flea infestation? I was concerned when I felt rough places on the skin, wondering if it may be something else.

Candy, I noticed that your name is XXXXX XXXXXXX, XX niece is named Candy Roberts also.

Thanks for the info

Wow

I have only met a few Candys and none with the same last name. Now you will not forget who I am if you have questions in the future

Yes I am 99% sure it is fleas they will get large scabby areas from scratching this can also lead to other health issues such as anemia, and tape worms

How will I know if it has tape worms and is there anything that I can do now to prevent or get rid of them?

Accepted Answer

since it is outdoors you may have a hard time seeing evidence of tapeworm(looks like small white rice) you can check around the anus and surrounding fur.

If it has enough fleas to scratch the way you are describing it is more likely then not tape worms are there. Your vet may give you the medication to treat tape worm with out seeing her if you explain the situation and purchase flea prevention. Some pet store also sell this.

The only way to prevent is to control the fleas
