Question

Hello, I am female thinking that I had a uti. Urine test came back clear albeit some protein in urine. I also have inflamed cervix. Swabs still to come back. I have a dull pain in lower stomach especially to left side and had a day of small bleeding between periods. I am obviously quite concerned. What else do you think this could be if not uti? Many thanks

Hello,

Are the antibiotics helping your symptoms?
Are you having or did you have any vaginal discharge?

The doctor only gave me three days of antibiotics. I have completed the course last week although still have symptons only probably the normal discharge I think. Just wondering what else this can be as my GP said she would refer me if swabs come back clear.

Answer

The swabs check for cervical/vaginal infection which would be one cause.

HPV, which is a viral infection of the cervix, can also cause inflammation and bleeding of the cervix.

Ovarian cysts can cause pain in the lower abdomen and occasionally irregular bleeding but would not cause the inflammation of the cervix.

Uterine fibroids can cause irregular bleeding and occasionally can cause pain.
Endometrial polyps and cervical polyps can also cause irregular bleeding.

Pain in the left lower abdomen can also be related to the colon.

If the swabs come back normal, likely an Ob/gyn will order an ultrasound of the pelvis to check the ovaries and uterus and do a pap smear as well.

Try not to worry.

My GP has already done a pap smear waiting for results last one was three years ago and came back normal. Could I have HPV having been with partner for 14 years? Unfortunately colon cancer runs in my family. Also maternal grandmother died from ovarian cancer (so I naturally think of this). Do you think it's more likely to be of the above than linked to cancer? I know ovarian cancer is the silent killer but I don't have swollen stomach.

Accepted Answer

I can understand your worries but I think it unlikely to be cancer.
You can have HPV even if you have been with the same partner (although it is less likely). HPV can remain dormant within the body and activate at any time.

Colon cancer is rare at age 37 and typically does not present this way. Weight loss, change in bowel habits, blood in the stool would be a more common presentation.
If you had a first degree family member (father, mother, brother or sister) diagnosed with colon cancer, you should begin screening 10 years before the age at which they were diagnosed.

Ovarian cancer is also unlikely to present this way.
Infection of the cervix is really what this sounds like, or an ovarian cyst.

I wish I could tell you the exact cause, but I can say that cancer would be my least likely diagnosis.
