Hello. Given the length of time this boat has been stored, I would strongly suggest that if you become serious about the purchase, you have a qualified marine surveyor take a careful look at the boat and all of it's systems. In the meantime, I would want to know:

  • Was any fuel left in the carbureters or EFI systems? If so, that fuel would have evaporated and if it was not stabilized would leave deposits.
  • Was the oil changed before storage? If not, the acid in the old oil may have been eating away at the interior of the motor.
  • Was the boat subject to freezing temperature? If so, are you certain it was completely drained, or was antifreeze added? If not, it could have been subjected to freeze damage

I would want to test engine compression. Each cylinder should be at least 100 psi with a variation of not more than 15 psi between any two, and both engines should be about the same. I would want to attempt to start the engines, perhaps using a portable fuel tank. Your ears can tell you a lot about the overall condition if it runs.

You didn't say if this is an inboard or inboard/outboard. If I/O, drain some lower unit oil and check the color and make sure there are no metal particles in it. If an inboard, you will need to evaluate the tranmissions, and take a look at the cutlass bearings.

OM, then take a careful look at the shafts - look for corrosion and any bends. Look at the cutlass bearing, although it will be dry. You really won;t be able to evaluate the stuffing box until the boat is in the water for a little while; after than make sure there is no more than a small trickle of water through the stuffing box (a little is normal). You should be able to turn the props by hand with the transmission in neutral. Try to get to the transmissions and check fluid level and color.
