Question

I have a low profile(7x17x20)SF20 model Suburban furnance in a 1993 Wildwood camper (by Rockwood). I follow the igniting instructions, but the unit does not fire(light). I turn off the gas valve. Cycle the fan for 5 minutes. Turn of the power. Open the gas valve. Turn on the power and set thermostat highr than room temperature. The fan comes on after about 15-20 seconds. Then after about 15 seconds, I hear the igniter (pezo)poping on but no flame. The heater is hard to get to because it is under the bed. Any suggestions?

Hi: Thanks for coming to Just Answer with your question. My name is Randall and I believe I can assist you with this. The first thing to check is the LP pressure at the regulator. This needs to be done at least once a year with a Manometer. Any RV shop can do this for you and you can take it off and bring it to them if you don't want to take the coach in. Low LP pressure is responsible for many gas related issues. You don't have to keep turning the gas on and off. If this is the original control board, it is probably a single try board. This means you get one shot at ignition. The later boards are 3-try boards. It may be that the control board is bad. This can manifest itself in any number of ways. The control board is on the left side of the furnace looking at it from the outside. If you need a new one, I'd recommend an aftermarket board made by Dinasaur Electronics in Oregon as they are far superior to the OEM boards. Hopefully, you have an outside access panel. If not, you will have to pull the furnace from the housing and that may be more than you want to attempt. Have the LP pressure checked first. This may solve you problem. Be sure you light the stovetop first and have the pressure equalized before you try the furnace, especially if it has been sitting idle for a time. You may ask any follow-up questions you feel are needful. Please hit the "accept" tab when we are finished so I get credit for assisting you. Feedback will be left for you and yours would be appreciated in return. All the best, R.J.

Randall,

Thanks for the reply. This is my first RV. It's a used 1993 Wildwood. Could you please explain to me how the furnance works, since it does not have a pilot light. Regarding the ignition attempts, it seems to me that I can hear three "pops" over about a 30 second time frame. Would this be a "3-try" board? Yes, the furnance has been sitting idle for a long time . Maybe a couple of years. My stove top and oven work OK.
