Question

I have a 1986 25hp mercury outboard that quit starting with the key it just clicks at what I believe is the solenoid. it still starts withe pull rope. Could it be the key switch? how can I figure this out without taking it to a shop? thanks ashley

Hello. If you are hearing a click from the motor, then it's not the key switch. First, make sure you have a good strong battery - use a different one or supplement it with a jumper pack to be sure, since a weak battery will cause the same symptom. Also, make sure the connections to the battery and at the motor are clean and tight - a dirty connection can also cause your problem. Assuming the battry and wiring is good, since it starts with the pull cord, you know everything else is OK, so the problem is with the solinoid or the starter motor itself. You can test the starter by using a heavy jumper across the two large terminals of the solinoid - if the starter runs then the solinoid is bad, if not then the starter is bad.
