Question

Hello- I adopted my Hansel, 4 year old Ragdoll/Maine Coon, mid-August. He was relinquished to the Humane Society & quickly adopted by a rescue organization; was there roaming w/other cats for 2 weeks when I got him. He appeared perfectly healthy, checked thoroughly by my vet. On 8/29 I applied Prescriptives, a topical OTC flea med. He quickly developed a skin reaction at the site which worsened. Took him to the vet on 9/11, no sign of fleas; he was given an anti-inflammatory shot (unsure of type). This helped for about a week. He has begun scratching again, very itchy on top of head (medication site), in front of ears & next to his mouth. Seems to scratch all over; head area much worse. Areas are scratched raw & continue to itch as they heal-reopening wounds. I have been treating areas with hydrogen peroxide (safe?) & fresh aloe vera. (I do not know when his last bath was & wonder if it would help.) Are there OTC treatments available? Hansel & I thank you.

Hi, thank you for the question.

First I would recommand giving her a bath as soon as you can ( you can use dawn dish soap).

If he is having a reaction to this medication you must remove all residue from the skin and fur. He may have spread the medication over other areas of the body including the face while grooming.

Besure to wash his face well with a wet slighly soapy cloth. Hydrogen peroxide is great for the initial cleaning of the wound , however I recommand switching to an anti bacterial soap and cleaning the area well twice a day.

You can apply an over the counter antibioticcream one with cortison may help with the itching.

Due to this reaction I would also not recommand using an over the counter product in the future I recommand you speak with your vet to see what they would recommand.
