Question

My neighbor found an orphaned baby squirrel and wanted to save it. I have somehow gotten stuck with it and have been feeding it a mouse and rat diet with some seeds and veggies. Hes probably about 6-7 weeks and VERY active. This week, most of the hair has fallen off of his tail. Hes not showing signs of mites that I can see or mange. Is this b/c of dietary needs and is the best thing for this little guy just to release him? Its turning cold here now and my neighbor is worried he will have a hard time surviving on his own. We live in Northern Virginia.

Accepted Answer

Hi, thanks for your question.

If your baby has mites they can not be seen with the naked eye, We scrap the skin and view under a microscope.

Since he has never had to find food on his own so I do not recommand letting him loose.

Also inorder to keep wild life in Va you must have a permit. I owuld recommand call the Virgina Wildlife center and they will conect you with a certified wild life rehaber in your area who will come get this little guy and prepare him for release
