Question
I have a 2003 Mitsubishi Galant that is having a problem......it will sometimes not crank after the car has been driven a distance. It sounds as if it wants to crank but something just simply not "catching" or firing in order for the engine to turn over. There are no other changes with the car other than it will not crank immediately. I usually have to wait about 45 minutes before the car will crank again and usually there's smoke coming from the car after this. I am a mother with young children, what could possibly wrong?

Hello XXXXXXX, it sounds like the starter is failing. When the engine and starter are hot, there is more of a load put on the starter and a failing one will drag. It would be best to have this taken car of as soon as possible, since it will only get worse and one day will not crank at all. In the interim, when it wont start, don't keep trying to crank the engine over, doing so will only hasten the starters demise. Allow enough time for it to cool, then start the engine.
