Question

My 1995 Range Rover has locked me out. It is the 4.0 SE. The central locking system is malfunctioning and not allowing the vehicle to start. My key fob has not worked for years, and this has never happened before. However, the locks started locking and unlocking as I was driving one day. Later that day as I closed the door to the car to check the mail, while it was running, it locked. I then had to get a locksmith to use a coathanger to unlock the passenger side door. I think this triggered the problem. Should I just order the new key fob from the UK, or is it something that the dealer will have to re-set? Thank you for any help you can give. This is my only vehicle to get to work, etc. Ann

Optional Information

Year: 1995
Make: LandRover
Make (other): Range Rover
Model: 4.0 SE

Already Tried:
Tried locking and unlocking the drivers side door with the key manually. This is not doing as it should and locking all 4 locks up and down. It only unlocks the driver side door. Central locking system is not working. The red light is blinking and ignition lights go on, but engine will not start. Looked through manual and cannot figure it out ---

Answer

Hi thanks for using JustAnswer. It sounds as if your drivers door latch has failed, there are 2 ways the alarm system deactivates on your vechicle, first is with the remote on the key the 2nd is using the key in the drivers door. You also mentioned that the doors where unlocking/locking on there own while driving. This is another sign of a door latch failure. So you will need to have the drivers door latch replaced, this should take care of vechicle not starting and more than likly get your central locking system working again.

Let me know if you need anything clarifed or have other concerns just reply back and I will do what I can.

Ok. That helps tons, but, one of the guys in the parts dept at the dealership told me I need to buy the new key fob, do you think that is necessary. It runs about $250 plus takes 2 weeks to get here from the UK.

Answer

well you could buy a new key fob, and they come preprogramed to your range rover, but here is my concern. In order to get the new remote sync'd with your range rover you need to use it in your drivers door lock and since you are haveing problems with that latch also I am concerned that you wont be able to snyc the remote and will still end up needing to replace the door latch.

sounds good. so i will order the door latch for the driver's side door only, and I assume you are saying my exisiting old key will work, even though the electronic/battery part of that original key does not work? The old key WILL work in the new door latch? Thank You!

Accepted Answer

correct your original key will work, when you replace the door latch, the lock cylinder is a different part and is only connected to the door latch by a small rod, so you will have no problems using your original key. That will get you going again :)
