Question

my dog has just been diagnosed with renal failure. She was in the vets for 2 1/2 days until her kidney function improved. Since monday (5 days ago) we have had her home. tempting her to eat a little chicken breast. She will not drink the electrolites water for some reason but wants regular water. Today she has eaten very little, very unhappy and moping around. She desperately wants to open her bowels but with no luck. The only time was Tuesday morning passing a thin cigar like stool full of grass. Thats it. She has gone off the chicken breast so I cooked a little chicken liver and that was accepted. All in all, very unhappy Tessa......is there anything recommended to tempt her to eat and is it okay if she drinks regular water. Many thanks, Beverly

Hi, thanks for your question. I'm so sorry to hear that your dog was diagnosed with kidney failure :( Has she been started on any medicines?

Accepted Answer

With renal failure you want to use a low phosphorus diet as it appears to be the phosphorus that is an issue.

When the kidneys are not functioning right toxins can build up making the dog feel pretty miserable and unwilling to eat.

Drinking is better than not drinking in this situation and you might need to get the electrolytes in her through subcutaneous fluids. Some vets will teach clients how to do that at home and others may offer reduced rates for regular fluid 'fill ups' at their clinic.

You might call and ask your vet about that to see if it helps her be interested in eating.

Do check in with them today to tell them she is not eating for you. They may want her in before the weekend.

You might try giving her some NutriCal a sticky supplement available at many pet supply stores to see if that jump starts her appetite. You give it right in the mouth like medicine.

Hope this helps you!

tHanks for your advice. We did return her to the vet today and unfortunately blood test revealed that her kidneys were in failure (worse than before) and we have had her put out of her misery. What a wonderful friend and companion Tessa has been.

Answer

My deepest sympathies on your loss. There is never a good time to lose a good dog.

If you have not seen www.petloss.com and the rainbow bridge story it may bring you some comfort. Tessa was lucky to have such devoted owners.

Thank you for the above accept.
