Question

My dog spit up a tiny amount of mucus(tablespoon) 2 days ago. Yesterday he was fine. This morning he had big bowel movement. He was chewing on his chewy and then vomited about a 1/3 cup of what looked like uneaten food but he really didn't eat this morning. He's napping comfortably. Any ideas??? He's a havanese -- aprox. 14 lbs -- 4 yrs old. On light meds for seizures -- has not had a seizure in 12 weeks.

Info Request

Hi XXXXXXXXXX~

Is there any possibility that he got into something he shouldn't have?

Is he an 'eater-of-objects' like socks, ect.?

Any other unusual symtoms?

He doesn't eat objects -- he may have eaten some stool yesterday. I haven't seen any evidence that he got into anything -- he's pretty much an inside dog. He may have nibble a tiny bit of houseplant leaf -- maybe 4 days ago. Could constipation cause the regurgitaing this morning?

Answer

Constipation could cause him to have an upset stomach...which could result in some vomiting. Another possibility is that he may have gotten a little acid reflux, which sometimes happens with medications, and that could be causing the occasional vomiting.

If you think the problem is constipation, you could try giving him a couple tablespoons of canned pumpkin (only real canned pumpkin, NOT pumpkin pie filling) with his meals today. That's usually enough to get things moving in the right direction. Of course, if he's still constipated and the pumpkin doesn't work, you might want to have your vet take a peek at him, as he may need to be manually disimpacted.

1 day later -- no more vomiting. 2 more bowel movements and ate regularly. Seems fine. I did give him some pumpkin last night with dinner.
Thank you!

Since we communicated yesterday -- he vomited his undigested breakfast 7 hr later and then his undigested dinner 6 hrs later. He still is behaving normal. We will contact his vet tomorrow--yes?

Accepted Answer

Yes, I would absolutely contact his regular vet. If there is an emergency vet in your area, it might not be a bad idea to have them take a peek at him...just to be on the safe side.
