We have a 4 year old pure bread blonde labrador. Weve had him since he was a puppy but we have not once ever heard him bark. He crys or whimpers when he wants something but most of the time he just hangs around having cuddles. Were sure he's not lethargic because he loves running for his ball on his walks but i'm worried he might be depressed. My partner disagrees and says he's just very calm and happy and therefore doesn't feel the need to bark. But surely he should have at some point?

He has never barked?

He just waits excitedly with his tail wagging and then when we answer it he just tries to lick whoever it is. He really really has never barked.

Dear friend,

He sounds like a GREAT dog. However, he may have something wrong with his throat as the only breed that cannot (does not ) bark is the Basenji:

He could have tonsiltis or a tracheal issue.

Since he is happy and eating, I do not think this is serious but I would bring it up to his vet at his next exam

Please let me know what what wrong and how he is doing.
