Question

I have a six-month old chihuahua. He licks his genitals persistently and is not easily discouraged or distracted from doing so. The vet says he doesn't see any cause for concern as there is no irritation or swelling. He says to keep any eye on it. Does anyone have any ideas what this may be? Behavioral? Thank you v. much.

Info Request

Hello,

How long is he doing this?

Is he neutered?

Thanks,

Terri

Hi Terri.

I have had Jack for two weeks. The breeder says she didn't notice the behaviour before.

He was neutered three weeks ago. I was hoping he would stop once the stitches were removed, but he hasn't.

The vet can't see anything wrong with him, and says that it is probably normal cleaning. However, he's so persistent. It can go on for 15+ minutes.

Thank you for your help.

Ashley

Dear Ashley,

Everything an animal does has a reason. Jack is either tryimg to relieve itching or pain like a burning feeling.

He may have a UTI or very strong urinary PH.

Give him either four drops of cranberry juice or 50 mg of vitamin C every day.

It will reduce the PH of his urine and make his bladder inhospitable to UTI bacteria.

Also dab the area with a cloth dipped in one part white vinegar to ten parts of water to relieve itching.

I hope your new baby feels better very soon.

Warmest best wishes,

Teri
