Question

Problem started two days ago. First I have a 99 boxter,2.5 litre. Two days ago, the car gave a series of double horn beeps out of the blue about two minutes apart and did it about ten times then stopped... Yesterday, my wife is driving the car and stops for coffee and when she returns to the car, it won't crank. No click, no nothing. Had it towed to a friends shop where he charged the battery and it started but it is missing and backfiring terribly. The alternator is charging at 14 volts. My friend is a caterpiller mechanic, thats why I'm coming to you all. One more thing, the nearest Porsche dealer to where I live is 180 miles away.

Answer

hi i can help you , have friend track and clean all the grounds coming from the battery , they have been trouble before, here is some info on it.

Customer Concern:No start, no crank. Tested the battery found it in good condition; tested the starter, found it ok. Turns over about half a turn then stops, found voltage dropping to 3.5 volts when trying to crank, has 12.7 volts when not cranking.
Tests/Procedures:1. Verify engine can be turned over by hand.

2. Check for voltage drop on both negative and positive sides of starting circuit.

3. Check the engine to body ground strap at center of vehicle.
Potential Causes:Loose Ground Strap

As I said previously, the engine starts, and missfires and backfires. I don't understand what test procedures 1 and 2 have to do with my problem. Please forgive my ignorance, I'm a carpenter.

i'm sorry i was adressing the first trouble you had ,

ok now fir the second trouble , the maf sensor is a very common cause of the miss and backfire heres a test for you.

Customer Concern: . Backfiring. Setting misfireing .
Tests/Procedures:1. Check the Mass Airflow (MAF) Kilo/hour readings. Specifications are as follows:

12-24 at idle,
30-60 at 2,500 RPM no load
600 at wide-open throttle full load.

2. Check for any intake leaks.

3. Check the breather hose under the oil separator on the right side of the vehicle and in the line that runs up the brake booster.
Potential Causes:Leaking Intake
Defective Mass Air Flow (MAF) Sensor
