Question

my 18 year old daughter while in her senior year of highschool thought she would help out a friend who needed a 3rd person to pay rent on an apartment in Gainesville. My daughter had no plans to go to college there. The 'friend' brought her the lease pkg, showed her where to initial and sign it and they had it notarized and faxed it back to the property management. They never rec'd any depostit, the unconditional & continuing guaranty, nor did they ever confirm approval of the housing application. She has a min wage part time job that gives her 5 to 16 hours a week and lives at home. The property management keeps calling her. I have told them verbally and via e-mail that she will not be living there, she has no money to do so even if she wanted to. They sent her a certified return receipt letter that we did not pick up. WHAT SHOULD I EXPECT - THEY WON'T DROP IT XXXXX@XXXXXX.XXX

Hello,

My name is Eli and I am one of JustAnswer's attorneys. I'll be helping you resolve your matter today.

If she is a co-signer on the lease, she is just as liable. The company can send the account into collections, or even litigate. if they get a judgment, they can garnish about 20% from her check and.or bank account. On either count, they'll still be opt to agree to a small repayment amount per month b/c they understand that they won't get their money any other way. But if she was 18 at time of signing, it is a valid contact...

Best of luck in your matter! I'm here if you need any more clarification or follow up info.

I hope you found my answer helpful, and if so please click on the GREEN ACCEPT button for my answer. This is the only way for me to get credit for my work.
