Question

1) Any easy checks for a cause of diarrhea ? I'm working with a stray and he has loose poop all the time. He also eats like a pig. I guess I should add that we are about as broke as we have ever been 2) I would like to trim this guy's nails but I am not suicidal. I have Lorazepam in 0.6mg tabs. Given that there are no issues can I calm the lad down for a little bit. I googled this and recommendations for doses ranging from 2mg to 10mg. I'm a 250lb guy and 2 tabs relieves all my anxiety and probably that of my neighbors :-) /2 I am quite concerned about dose and a capable of calculating dose base on weight. He is about 4kg Thanks for any input. Ed

Hi,

A likely cause of diarrhea in a stray cat is intestinal parasites. There are several different ones so I would try to give him a broad spectrum de-worming product. Panacur is a good one (it kills roundworms, hookworms, and tapeworms), but it may only be available through a veterinarian. You could ask and see if they would send it with you without seeing the cat if you explain that its a stray. Otherwise, Strongid is a good product for roundworms, which are probably the most likely culprit. Mix whatever product you try with a small amount of canned cat food. This usually works well.

Personally, I would not recommend trying to trim his nails. Anytime a pet is only partially sedated or tranquilized there is still a good chance of getting bit. If he isn't tame enough to do it without medication I just wouldn't do it.
