Question

Hey Billy! It's Jennifer in Proctorville Ohio again. You helped me determine, with a pocket knife and a little reading light, that my thermostat was bad. That was a week or so ago. I'm ready to install my new thermostat. It is a Honeywell 3100c. The problem is that my old one, Totaline, model p474-0100, (looks like a piece of junk...but then, I asked for a really simple one when my new Trane system was installed! lol) Anyway, of course, the code letters don't match. The old one has, left to right: R; G; Y1; W2; W1 (which also can use B or O); Y2; and C. I marked each one with the little code papers when I removed the old thermostat, and have attached the new back plate to the wall. The new thermostat codes: E; aux; Y; G; 0; L; R; B; and C. Can you tell me which wires go where? It's supposed to get cold tonight!! lol Thanks, Jennifer

Hi,

I need to know what type of equipment you have ( gas furnace or heatpump )and which terminals actually had wires on them on the old thermostat.

Thanks

Trane elec. heatpump and furnace.

I know that when Billy helped me check if the thermostat was bad,I loosened R YG O. R and G for the blower, Y for the heatpump, and O for cooling. I marked the wires as I loosened them today on the old thermostat. Did you get that Left to Right sequence that I sent in my first message?

Do I just wait for someone else, or do I need to start over?

You do not need to start over.

Did your old themrostat have a wire hooked up to the y2 terminal?

No, I don't think so. I have written down W1, W2, Y1, R, and G as the wires I took loose. There was one wire, a brown one, not connected.

Answer

Your R, Y, and G will connect just like they did on the old stat.

The w2 will now connect to the aux terminal.

Your w1 will now connect to the o/b terminal.

You will need to install a jumper from the AUX to the E.

Make sure you do not do this with the power on.

Turn the power off at the furnace breaker.

Please respond with any questions or comments you may have.

Please tell me about the jumper...?

Posted by Kenton Guidry 53 days and 6 hours ago.

Answer

A jumper is a small piece of wire.

Connect the two terminals with some extra thermostat wire.

OK, so make a jumper from Aux over to the E screw. Worst case scenario, what can go wrong? I can't kill my heat pump can I?

Accepted Answer

Yep, just run a wire from aux to e.

Does this thermostat have an rc and an rh terminal, or does it just have the R?

Nothing will go wrong. This is the correct way to wire it.

Just make sure the power is off from the furnace breaker.

Just the R. (The power is off, thanks for your concern. Wouldn't want to be a 60 year old widow found electrocuted with a pocket knife and a booklight for tools in her hand.lol

I will fine be for sure...lol. But I can tell you that they see you coming in this town, where everyone knows everyone. I had a new thermostat installed by a local professional and he finished by handing me a bill for $438. $200 of it was for his time over and back, 20 min each way and for a trip back to get the thermostat, even though I told them I needed a new thermostat and just wanted a simple one. He assessed the need and then drove back to get it. $99 per hour plus the two trips. It might be in line, I don't know, I just know I can't personally afford it if I can do it myself. Thanks to fellows like you!
