Question

What could be the cause of low blood count in a cat? Its not leukemia but it keeps dropping. Also it isn't feline aids. Todays results are his red blood count is now 10 when last week it was 29. And his white count is down to 2 when it was 11 last week. My vet doesn't know what it could be. He is taking Clavermox - we initially took him to the vet as he looked sick and he had a temp of 104 which took over 2 hours to get down. Today we were told to replace the Hi-Vite drops we have been giving him with Pet-Tinic. Also I have 4 other adult cats that are indoor/outdoor cats - do I need to keep them away from him as they may pass some illness on to him that he can't fight off, or on the flip side - can he spread his illness onto them? I would appreciate any help you could give me. But I understand this could well continue to be a mystery. He doesn't look or act as sick as he must be, and neither is he infested with fleas. Any help would be a relief Sincerely XXXXX XXXXXXX

Accepted Answer

If they have not tested him for exposure to rodent bait that might be it.

You can ask the vet about that.

As your cat goes out if he ate a poisoned rodent this could cause a problem.

You can read about rodent bait here

I asked him if it could be poison and he didn't mention there were any tests for that sort of exposure. What are the tests called? (If you know the name off hand)

Answer

One would be a clotting test.

Another possible issue would be a bone marrow problem where the cat's body is not making blood cells at the needed rate. Your vet would call that situation a nonregenerative anemia and they would see that there are no or very few immature RBC's in the sample.
