Question

We have a local stray cat, Mouch. She is normally loveable, affectionate, and very lively. Last night she came to us lethargic, unmotivated, walks very slowly if she walks at all. No visible wounds, we checked for snake bites. There was a recently killed mole on our step [well partially eaten mole guts.] We don't have the funding to take her to a vet, but I suspect maybe a small amount of poisoning from a poisoned mole. She did drink a bowl of water last night, and did have signs of diariah. Is there anything else we might be able to do in the home? I also checked her pupils, they are expanding/contracting slowly, and the fur around her mouth is wet, as if drooling.

Hi there,

Thank you for your post!

Is she eating and drinking?

Any vomiting or diarrhea?

As I stated in the question - she drank a bowl of water last night. There were signs of diarrhea on her fur when we found her yesterday. Nothing fresh today, and I do not see any vomit anywhere. She is not eating however, nor has she drank any water today.

Thank you for your post and reply!

These are always the difficult cases - when an outdoor cat may have ingested a toxin. Most often unfortunately there are no toxin tests - and we look for body changes as a result and treat supportively for them.

If possible - bloodwork would be an excellent idea - to see if there are any body system changes that could point to a specific toxin.

If that is not possible - we can try supportive care and hope whatever was ingested passes through the system.

Until then, at home care can include:

- You can try to offer small amounts of water or diluted pedialyte for hydration and electrolytes. You can even purchase a dropper from your local pharmacy to offer the water/pedialyte mixture by mouth.

-
A calorie dense nutritional supplement such as nutrical:

- Another option would be baby food. If you are going to try this, please purchase baby food that does not have any ingredients such as garlic or onion.

Many baby foods now will only have the ingredients of the item and water...for example chicken and water. But they will not have any other salts or seasonings. This is what you need. Just chicken and water or beef and water for example.

I hope this helps!
