Question

OK. know of a couple that has built an apartment in which they are living in on the second floor of the horse barn. Have 1700+ sq ft home on grounds that has flooding issues. Have looked up the property and there is no record of improvements on the barn and property is listed as a 1 family dwelling. Am tick off because we live on the same rd and were denied permit to create an apartment for our parents above the detatched garage. They are not paying taxes on the apartment and have even put in a septic tank without permits. Who do I call to have them inspected?

I meant what town- no matter- Go to your Town, City, or County building department. This is most likely where you applied for your refused permit. Report the unpermitted activity. The tax collector may wish to respond as well.

I am no fan of Government telling me what living arrangements I may or may not exercise. And I'm sure you are ticked off that your Government is telling you NO to spiffing up your garage for Mom and Pop. But before you take out your anger on your neighbor, who had nothing to do with your refusal, you should appeal to your zoning board- citing the existance of your neighbors spiffed up barn as evidence that this use already exists and has not caused any harm to anyone, and that you are entitled to equal treatment. If zoning is willing to turn a blind eye to your neighbors barn, they must be willing to turn a blind eye to your garage.

Last, consider that your turning the government loose on your neighbor makes you an accomplice to that very government that you despise, and will not get you a permit, which is your goal.
