Optional Information

Computer OS: Windows XP
Browser: IE

Already Tried:
I have to use the button on the hard drive to shut it down. have tried to clean up the hard drive. Ran "cleanup" software. But system won't launch Defrag. All seemed to start after my husband unplugged the external backup drive without using "safely remove hardware". Not sure if it's related. Also recently installed new software called Adworks that accesses work server.

Answer

Mmc.exe is part of the Microsoft Management Console, is responsible for displaying system management plugins. It is common for virus and spyware to disguise themself as the genuine one. The following malware is known to disguise itself as the genuine mmc.exe: W32/Dzan-A (%SystemRoot) W32/Oscabot-I (%SystemRoot%inisys.exe) W32/Lovgate-F (%SystemRoot% or other locations) Common Errors mmc.exe - Application Error Microsoft Management Console not working after the attempt to open Device Manager fails. Please download Microsoft's (Brand New) free Anti Virus Client, from here : http://www.microsoft.com/security_essentials/ and let it do a full/thorough scan. If the issue still occures, move to the steps below. Next, please execute a SFC or "Surface Scan". This will scan the Operating System and replace any damaged or missing system files. To do this, Click Start > Run, Type CMD, and hit Enter. In the Comman Prompt window, type the following: sfc /scannow (and press enter). It may replace any damaged file(s) or .dll(s) that work with components of the Management Console or (MMC.Exe). Lastly, reboot the machine, if you still recieve these errors; then please perform a cleanboot. To do this, follow the steps below: 1. Click Start, and then click Run. The Run window appears. 2. In the Open box, type msconfig and then click OK. The System Configuration Utility appears. 3. Click on the "Services" tab. 4. Check the box at the bottom that states "Hide all Microsoft Services". 5. Now click on "Disable All" 6. Next, click the "Start Up" tab. 7. Now click on "Disbale All" 8. Click Apply and OK. When you are prompted to restart the computer, click Yes. This will essentially disable anything Microsoft Windows does not nee to run. You will notice a significant increase in computer speed here. Note however, it will also disable any antivirus apps, as well as spyware (in many cases). Please let us know if the error still pops up after you have dont everything above. If you wish to undo the Clean Boot mentioned above, follow the steps to have windows restart normally with all drivers, programs, and your regular video settings. 1. Click Start, and then click Run. The Run window appears. 2. In the Open box, type msconfig and then click OK. The System Configuration Utility appears. 3. Click Normal Startup. 4. Click OK. 5. When you are prompted to restart the computer, click Yes.

Hi. Thanks for answering my question. I have not yet tried the tactics you detailed, because suddenly my pc problem morphed and I've been waiting to see if this latest issue sticks or if it goes back to what it was doing previous. The new issue is that it now begins the shut down process without any mmc.exe error messages, but gets hung up on the "windows is shutting down" screen. This is actually the first symptom I had, then it started giving the mmc.exe errors that I contacted JustAnswer about, and now back to the initial problem. All I have done in the interim is try to clean it up a bit with a disk defrag. Are these issues related? Should I still follow your instructions or try something different?
