Question

I have just purchased a 2003 530i manual with M-pack It has 97,000 Km's and is in great shape. I had it inspected by a reputable import shop which came back positive, with a few minot issues. I asked them to explore a vibration I heard and felt under hard acceleration over 4000 rpm and they did not experience it or report anything about it. On the drive home it happened again - very disappointing. It seems to emanate from the rear left tire area. Could it be a limited slip differential or the traction control malfunction? Any suggestions as to what might be the issue?

Hello! Welcome to justanswer!

Does it happen from a dead stop if you floor it?

Does it feel like its comming from behind the shifter like between the rear seats?

It does not happen from a dead stop, only at speed and only at and over 4000rpm. I could be from behind the shifter...as I do sense some vibration through the shifter, but it could also be farther back - as in between the seats as you mentioned.

Ok, does it only happen above 4K RPM in any gear? Is your vehicle a stick or Auto?

It is a stick. It seems to happen only at speed, which is in 3rd to 5th gear. I haven't had it happen yet at lower speeds in 1st and 2nd.

Accepted Answer

Ok, thats usually a bad center support bearing for the driveshaft. Have seen it over 25 times do what you describe. Also have the rear lower ball joints and upper control arms checked as well.

The rear ball joints and upper control arms have been checked. There is a small amount of play reported, but this driveshaft support bearing seems more likely to me. have you any idea how much time to repair this support bearing (labour) ?

The part is about $77 and the labor is 2.5 hours.
