Question

I have a metal gutter that has rusted through in one spot. I need to know if it can patched. If so, with what and what kind of professional can I call to do the job?

First let me say that you will get a far better result if you call a gutter company and have them replace the section of gutter containing the corroded area. Patches are not aesthetically pleasing and therefore should be considered a temporary solution. Most gutter companies will not patch a gutter because it reflects badly upon them. Instead they will replace an entire section of gutter and depending upon the length of the section of gutter that contains the corroded area it may not cost you much more to replace the entire section. But, yes it can be patched and if you want it patched you will most likely have to do it yourself or call a handyman. If you do it yourself, you will need a piece of aluminum sheet large enought to cover the rusted area (you can get this at Home Depot in the Hardware section). Cut the sheet to fit the area which you need to patch, hold it over the corroded area then drill one rivet hole in one corner of the sheet and drill it all the way through the gutter as well (get the rivets from the gutter section of Home Depot and use the size drill bit recommended on the package). Once you have drilled the first hole, remove the plate, coat the back side of the plate with gutter seam seal sealant (Also located in the Gutter Section of Home Depot) and then place the sheet back onto the gutter while aligning the previously drilled hole. Place a pop rivet into the hole and then secure with a pop rivet tool. Repeat the process every 1-2" along the edge of the sheet. Once the sheet is firmly in place smear the gutter seam sealant along the joint between the sheet and the gutter. You have now patched the rusted area.
