Question

I'm 29. My dad died almost five years ago and lately I've been finding myself getting overly sappy/weepy when I am watching a tv show or a movie where someone dies. I never really had this problem and I am trying to better understand what is causing me to get so emotional when watching these videos.

Answer

Hi,

The fact that this comes 5 years after your Dad's death, suggests that it's not a regular grief reaction. Grief happens after a death and remain for however long. After two years, prolonged and continued grief turns to depression.

It may be that you are developing depression. Depression causes people to get weepy over things that they know they would not normally get weepy over.

You could try counsling again, or you could try an antidepressant which you would need to get from a psychiatrist.
