Question

My cat is 2 1/2 years old and she keeps gaining weight. She has gained almost 3lbs since last Oct and is not pushing 14lbs. I only give her about 1 cup of food a day to share with other kitty. She is also drinking a lot of water, probably 2 cups of water every other day or more. Is this cause for concern? She is currently on Nutro for indoor cats.

Answer

OK,thanks for the reply. Unfortunately, many cat owners have been led to believe that dry food is an acceptable option for all cats. True, some cats do well on dry food for their entire lifetime. However, many cats do not handle the large amount of carbohydrate that is in dry foods. Cats are carnivores - their bodies are built to handle meat proteins as their primary source of energy. Carbohydrates are used inefficiently - they are stored as fat mostly, and do not contribute to maintenance and repair of the body.

My advice for any overweight cat is to slowly eliminate the dry food from the diet, replacing it with a high quality canned food high in protein, such as Purina DM (it's a diet made for diabetic cats, but it happens to be an excellent option for weight control too). Realistically, even the Nutro canned version will be WAY better than the dry, for reducing obesity. It's just important to be sure not to overfeed, since too much canned food can also cause obesity.

Should I put both cats on the wet food? My other kitty is only about 10lbs.

Accepted Answer

My usual recommendation is for all cats to eat canned food - there's too many things about dry food that concern me nutritionally -- and dry food exists mainly for convenience purposes, not because it's nutritionally superior in any way. I wish all aspects of pet care were neat, easy, and clean, but as we all know, it's often not true (even with those new fancy self cleaning litterboxes! :) ). So yes, I would switch both cats to canned food. And I'd be sure to monitor their eating habits to be sure the heavy cat isn't hogging most of the food.
