Question

My son's 2000 Spectra is stuck in park, what to do. Also at this time we were working on trying to move the gear from park the key actually will not go to the lock posotion and will not come out. So I actually have 2 issues. I did read on line someone resolved the stuck in park issue with a screw driver, but how?

we did push the brakes in while trying to move from the park position, not sure if the actual lights came on at the back of the car??

Answer

Yep, the lights in the back. The brake light switch is connected to the ignition system. If the switch is bad it's likely you won't be able to put into drive, reverse etc...

Also asked the question that the key is stuck in the ignition, would this confirn your answer regarding the brake light switch. Where is this switch located.

Answer

The switch is located behind the brake pedal. Depending if and when the brake switch failed could cause this key issue. I am also thinking possibly a shift cable could be bad. Also, the shift lock actuator has a very high failure rate. Did he spill something on the shifter?Tim West40085.6268650463

How is the best way to figure if the shift cable is bad? and where is this located.

Accepted Answer

Under the hood on top of the transmission there is a cable connected. The cable runs through the firewall behind the dash. See if you can manually select the different gears. You might have to unbolt the cable, but you might be able to work it without removing the cable. With someone in the drivers seat foot on the brake and another person turning the switch attempt to start the car, attempt to move the key attempt to shift gears.
