Question

When my dog gets excited (ie seeing ducks, blue herons, etc.) she emits an oily, smelly substance over her whole body. She is a mutt. Is there something that I can give her to control the odor? Thanks!

Answer

Hi there

There are two possible options here, as some dogs will secrete a scent from the 'anal gland' when excited- and although this gland is located either side of the anus, when the secretion is expelled, the whole dog tends to smell of it- so if the scent has a slightly 'fishy' odor to it, then it's from this anal scent gland. The best way to help keep this gland empty (so it doesn't empty when excited) is to add some cereal bran into the diet, as this gland should empty when she has a poo- so add a tablespoon of bran to each meal to try and encourage the gland to stay empty.

If the smell is more like an extreme doggie odor, then it's probably 'sebum'- which is oil secreted by the sebum glands in the skin. If this is the case then the use of a specialist shampoo such as 'Sebolytic' or 'Sebalyt' should help lower the levels of oil, and reduce the smell.

Hope this helps

My dog's odor isn't fishy smelling so it's more apt to be the sebum glands. The problem will be that I'll have to bathe her daily. When she sees the animals/ducks, she starts trembling and the odor begins. Isn't there something else to control the odor?

Accepted Answer

Yes, that would be a problem!

You could try a product called 'Smell Goodies' which contains a natural product (chlorophyll) which is a plant derivative. It's meant to work by absorbing odors secreted by the sebaceous glands in the skin- in other words this 'sebum' that i've been talking about.

It's a tablet given once daily.

I don't have any experience using this, but from what i've read it's worth a try as it's safe and natural, and may work!!

I'd use it in combination with shampooing weekly/biweekly though
