Question

I have a Mercedes A160 automatic which over the last year or so, the automatic clutch starts slipping as it moves automatically up and down the gears. It makes a kind of rough noise and sometimes shudders. By pushing hard on the accelerator to force it to lower the gear, it quickly moves to the lower gear without any trouble, but once it needs to move to a higher gear and laboring, the noise starts again as it tries to shift to a higher gear. Does this mean that the clutch or clutches require replacing?

Hi! you have what is called an internal pressure loss in your transmission, which is causing the slipping and shuddering you are describing. Hate to say this, but your vehicle needs to go to a facility which is familiar with a160 automatic transmissions,

and a likely removal and disasembly will be required. Problem will get worse, and may eventually leave you stranded when all line pressure is lost.

This problem can be caused by a internal seal that holds fluid pressure to hold a specific clutch. When the seal, or a valve leaks, pressure is loss to that specific clutch creating what you feel as a shudder or a slip.

Although this is not the answer you are looking for or hoping for, it is correct.

Hope this information was helpful to you and an accept with feedback is always greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Nick.
