Question

Last week I experienced itchiness around one particular area at the base of my vulva. This itchiness has turned into pain. There is one small lesion but does not resemble a wart or a herpes blister. I am sexually active and have confirmed that I do have herpes prior to any of these events. What do you think this is?

Hi there

Unfortunately, without being able to see it, it will be difficult to tell you exactly what is going on. I CAN tell you that Herpes (genital) do not always come in the form of groups of large blisters (like you would typically think about with Herpes). Some people will often mistaken a small outbreak as an insect bite or other minor skin condition. You mentioned itchiness that turned into pain....this is very typical for Herpes. A few other options could be irritation from sexual intercourse, irritation from any soaps, creams, or detergent. Also, the absolute best way to know if it is genital herpes is to go ahead and take a treatment of Valtrex or Zovirax (as most people who know they have herpes will have this on hand in case of a sudden breakout) and see it this helps, or let your OB/GYN take a look.

Hope this helps!
