Question

Our rat has begun biting. He lives in a large cage (3 story, made for a ferrett) and is fed 2x per day both real and store food. He also is out in the early morning and evenings to socialize. We've noticed him being more aggressive lately. He's always been on the go and not really what I would call the cuddly kind of animal. He recently chewed through and electrical wire -- which we wonder if he got shocked. Would love any advice as we have a 5 year old and am no longer comfortable with the two of them being together.

Accepted Answer

One form of aggression in this species can begin as the males become mature. Their personalities sometimes undergo a significant change, and biting can be one of the results. If biting persists consult a veterinarian who treats rats. The vet may recommend that you have your rat neutered.

It is possible the rat is dealing with pain from mouth burns from chewing the electrical cord and pain can make any animal grumpy. For that too a vet visit might be the best choice.

Hope this helps you!

Thank you NancyH. That all makes sense. We live in San Francisco, CA, which doesn't seem to include a vet on your list. Any other sites that might list CA specific vets? If not, we can call around. Thanks again.

Answer

I'd suggest calling local vets and asking who in the area does small pet care like this.

Here are some CA vets to check

I saw one in San Francisco who may be close enough or able to tell you someone closer.

Thanks for your above accept!
