Question

I have looked up side effects for the demodectic mange treantment, Promeris, and I AM NOT thrilled about what ive read from people, or read in side effect articles. My dog has the mites, and i was given a shampoo by my vet which only seems to have made it worse. I was also told to use promeris by him. I was told to use Ivermectin and havent read anything horrible thats happened to pets treated with it. I would just like to ask what you recommend? My dog is not a breed of collie or sheep dog, hes an american pitt bull- lab mix. hes about 2 years old and also suffers from a sensitive stomach and has only one dropped testicle. (im working on getting him fixed. I know the problems that can cause) please respond soon. thank you for your time. -Seana

Answer

Hello,

I am sorry to hear about your concern.

Your are a step ahead of me. Since there is not the collie breed concern, ivermectin, would be the most common treatment for demodex. Generally, it is started at a lower dose and given orally once a day, and the dose is gradually increased over a few week period. Frequently, the treatment needs to be continued for a month or two to get the problem resolved.

Personally, ivermectin has almost always been my first choice for demodex.

But, keep in mind, ivermectin is not a harmless chemical either. You need to keep an eye out for digestive problems or sickness, and that is why I wean them on to the higher doses in case there is a hypersensitivity reaction.

Good Luck

can I get iermectin at my local vet? or would a 1/10 dose of cattle ivermectin (which was recoomended by a vet student) be safe?

Accepted Answer

Absolutely not.

You must get from a vet.

Something goes wrong, you would cause serious injury to your pet.

Get a regular prescription from your vet based on body weight. NOTHING ELSE.

That vet student should be shot. If they knew more about ivermectin hypersensitivity reactions and the number of cases that vets see due to inappropriate dosing, they would have thought twice before giving you that advice.
