Hello,
I am sorry to hear about your concern.
Your are a step ahead of me. Since there is not the collie breed concern, ivermectin, would be the most common treatment for demodex. Generally, it is started at a lower dose and given orally once a day, and the dose is gradually increased over a few week period. Frequently, the treatment needs to be continued for a month or two to get the problem resolved.
Personally, ivermectin has almost always been my first choice for demodex.

But, keep in mind, ivermectin is not a harmless chemical either. You need to keep an eye out for digestive problems or sickness, and that is why I wean them on to the higher doses in case there is a hypersensitivity reaction.

Absolutely not.
You must get from a vet.
Something goes wrong, you would cause serious injury to your pet.
Get a regular prescription from your vet based on body weight. NOTHING ELSE.
That vet student should be shot. If they knew more about ivermectin hypersensitivity reactions and the number of cases that vets see due to inappropriate dosing, they would have thought twice before giving you that advice.
