Question

Hi. I have a 17 year old cat, he vomits frequently and has been losing weight. His stomach is constantly growling/gurgling and he has lost quite a bit of weight. This has been been ongoing for the last two months - a trip to the vet is next. Any thoughts as to why this is happening?

Accepted Answer

Any time that an older cat is vomiting and losing weight it is a concern that there is something serious going on internally. The first things that come to mind are liver disease and kidney disease, but it is also possible that he could have stomach/intestinal cancer that is causing this. Unfortunately, if it has been going on for 2 months, I doubt that it is going to be something simple, such as gastroenteritis, or something that can be easily fixed. :( I am sorry. I would recommend starting with basic full bloodwork from your vet, and go from there. I would get in this week, if possible, to your vet.

I hope it ends up being something treatable. I wish you the best of luck. Take care.
