Question

i'm thinking of purchasing a 2006 SAAB 9-7X. its very nice. the dealer hasn't answered my question so i'm asking it here. as the future of SAAB is questionable in the usa, can a chevy dealer (trail-blazer cousin) service the SAAB? are their engines and transmissions the same?

Answer

Hello and welcome!

The 9-7x is basically a GM vehicle. To answer your question, yes, the engine and transmission are physically interchangeable. There might be some software differences in the control modules, which would stay with the vehicle anyway, but the basic units are the same.

As you can see from my profile, I have worked on Saabs for 30+ years. I'm currently employed at a GM dealer, and honestly, the GM guys know more about these vehicles than I do! So there shouldn't be a problem with getting it repaired. Also all the service information is found on GM's internet-based system, and any GM tech would have access to it.

There are some differences, obviously, like the key between the seats, but nothing that an experienced tech shouldn't be able to deal with.

Hope this helps! Thanks for checking in with us!

i know this may be sensitive, but would a SAAB dealer charge more than a chevy dealer for the same work on the same engine? would it be considered a domestic engine istead of an import? i used to have an audi and the labor in 2000 was $110 an hour.

you have been a big help....i'm 80% sure i'll get the trollblazer Cool

thanks

Hello again-

Yes, generally a Saab shop would charge more than a domestic dealer. It all depends on your area and the dealer. A year ago, GM grouped Saab with Cadillac and Hummer, so the rate was whatever those dealers were. As far as the future...???
