Question

My dog has been on antibiotics and intestinal medicines for 7 weeks. He has not eaten anything in 5-7 days. He is still drinking alot of water and urinating. He does not seem to be in any pain. His white blood count was over the top and his liver enzymes were very high. His kidneys looked okay. What should I expect to happen and how do you think it will happen. He is not currently on any medication. I could not force one more pill down his throat. If I thought he is going to be in pain, I would consider Euthanasia. We have not been back to our Vet in 2 weeks. What are your thoughts? He is 12 years old, Shetland Sheep Dog.

Has he lost a lot of weight? How is his energy level?

Reply

He has probably lost 5# +, but he was a little over weight. Up until today, his energy level has amazed me. He seemed very weak, but still wanted to come to work with me and has taken a couple of short walks. He is big for a Sheltie.

OK, thanks for your reply. When we see pets with chronic, terminal illnesses, we are concerned with quality-of-life issues, first and foremost. My opinion is that any dog who doesn't want to eat, is a dog that feels pretty miserable, seeing as most dogs live to eat. Loss of appetite for several days suggests that there's a major issue going on that is causing nausea and general malaise - not a pleasant situation to be in. I equate it to having the flu, that doesn't go away.

If no medications seem to help, and surgery isn't an option, then euthanasia is a humane way to alleviate the symptoms of chronic illness. It's not an easy decision to make, for certain, but it is often the kindest choice we can make for our pets, in this situation.

If nothing is done, he will become weaker and sicker as the days go on, and he will likely have a slow, downward spiral, with his last days being positively miserable. It would be nice to know we saved him from having to endure that sort of spiral.
