Question

Just adopted a 1 1/2yr old cat. She is very affectionate and loves people. She follows me from room to room. She cries when I leave for the day to go to work. I can hear her all the day down the hall when I'm leaving. Can't get any sleep either. When I close the bedroom door she starts to cry constantly. I live in a condo, and I don't want to get any complaints. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thank you Kelly Poulos

Info Request

Hello, Kelly

How long ago did you adopt her?

Is she any specific breed like a Siamese, Persian, etc.?

Has she been spayed?

I adopted her a day ago. She is not a specific breed. She is a tabby cat.

Yes she is spayed.

She cries constantly.

Accepted Answer

Thank you for the extra information.

I know this annoying for you, but it will get better. She has no idea where she is, who you are, or what happened to the previous situation she was in. I don't know where you got her, but I am guessing maybe perhaps she was around other people or animals she was used to and now they are gone. That plus the unfamiliar surroundings are just causing some anxiety.

This will pass. Get some Feliway. This is a pheromone that reduces stress, anxiety, and aggression in cats.

You can find this at Pet Smart and also online here: http://www.catfaeries.com/feliway.html

Get her her own cat bed. Put some Feliway on the bed. Also if she is attaching her self to you, you can also put an unwashed article of clothing of yours in her bed too. The scent of you will help calm her and put her at ease.

Leave a night light on at night and also a TV or radio on low. Do this while you are gone too. To help her not feel so alone.

She will get better. Just make her feel secure in her new home. Once she feels secure, this will pass.

If she did come from a shelter or similar place where she had kitty "friends" maybe getting her a playmate can help too. @ cats can keep each other company and occupied all day and night.

Sincerely, XXXXX
