Question

I have had what I thought was a male yeast infection for an extended period of time now and it appears to be refusing to heal. I went to an STD clinic at one point and they told me it was not herpes or any STD. When I wake there tends to be a bit of a white film on the infected area, it is under the foreskin near the bottom of the head. Is this a yeast infection? How long should it take to heal from an anti-fungal?

Info Request

Hello; Thank you for writing in tonight. I want to provide you with the best possible information, so I do have a few questions. I hope you understand. Any other medical conditions? Are you circumcised? Have you had a urinalysis to check for a urinary tract infection? Have you ever taken any oral antifungal medication? You mention using an antifungal medication. I assume this was topical. Can you tell me when you started the medication and how often you used it? Also, how did you respond? Any improvement? When you went to the clinic and all STDs were ruled out, did they diagnose you and recommend treatment? If so, what? Please let me know. Lisa

I am not circumcised. I do not have a local doctor due shortages in the area for a GP so I've had to make due with a walk in clinic, I have not had a urnalysis test. I have not taken any oral anti-fungals. I've been using a cream the last few days with no noticeable effect so far.

They did not have a diagnosis for me at the STD clinc solely that it was not Herpes or a few other STDs that cause sores.

When I originally got the infection it looked more like reddish sores and it was nearer to the urethral opening. Now it is a few patches near the bottom of the head of the penis to either side. They almost resemble little craters.

The white film i mentioned builds up over periods of type if I do not wipe it off.

Hello;

Thank you for responding.

Based on the information you have presented, this sounds very suspicious for a possible yeast infection. Uncircumcised men can be more prone to balanitis or other problems with bacterial and yeast overgrowth. In your particular case, since this began at the urethra, you may need some systemic treatment, not just a topical medication.

At this point, I would recommend an additional visit with a provider. He/she will be able to check a urinalysis for infection and also provide medication. Fungal infections are usually easily recognized. For now, try to keep the area clean and dry. You can continue to use the antifungal medication you have available, until you are able to be seen.

I noticed you failed to mention any other medical conditions. I do want to mention that diabetes and disorders of immunity can also increase the risk of balanitis or infections, in addition to not being circumcised.

I hope this helps. If you have additional question or concerns, please let me know.

Lisa

The anti fungal cream appears to have made it worse, the "Scars" are much larger and now produce a lot more fluid when left alone, its almost pus like

Hello;

Thank you for responding.

At this point, I am suspicious about possible bacterial infection, expecially since the exudate is pus like. This may require some antibiotics. At any rate, were you able to get an appointment with a provider? You need to be seen and the areas visualized. You also likely need a culture of the lesions. If you were not able to get an appointment with a provider and need some help finding a low cost or no cost medical clinic in your area, please let me know. I would be more than happy to try to find a medical clinic in your area. Just let me know your region.
