Question

Male, 10.5 year old Golden had black lump on the back of his neck. it burst and became a scab. Scab was removed and wound has a deep hole in the middle; raw skin elevated around the hole; on one side the skin comes to a point. No hair on the wound. It seemed to get better and now it is raw again. Dog is vomiting at night occasionally. He also had chronic vomiting for 3 weeks, but it stopped. He has been eating 2 cans Hills ID a day. If he has anything else, such as a crust of bread, he reguitates it. Question: treatment of cyst/tumor; it this related to the intestinal problems. What is your best guess as to the cause of reguritation? (No much food, mostly mucus)

Hello, First, keep in mind, if that cyst is infected, you really need to be doing oral antibiotics. That it mind... I would only relate the two if any of the medications being given were causing a gastritis, and were simply not tolerated by the stomach very well. Otherwise, my other concerns for the vomiting include: a chronic gastritis, pancreatitis, food allergies, stomach cancer (have to consider it), bilious vomiting syndrome (if vomiting in early morning, some dogs vomit if they go to long without eating), and intestinal parasitism (especially, giardia). So, To help settle the stomach you could try one of the following drugs. My favorite product is Pepcid (an over-the-counter antacid). Pepcid (Pepcid A.C.) Pepcid comes in 10mg or 20mg tablets. You can give it every 12 hours. The dose can be found within the following link: http://www.petplace.com/drug-library/famotidine-pepcid/page1.aspx Prilosec http://www.petplace.com/drug-library/omeprazole-prilosec/page1.aspx This would also help with gastroesophageal reflux. Answer

Stomach cancer is not really the first thing I am thinking about. The symptoms could be no different then stomach upset. I had to throw it on the list of considerations. About infection? You don't the vet would have to guess off of examination. Ideally, taking a little smear of it and looking under the microscope. Either bacteria and/or yeast is present, or not. Yes, antibiotics can cause stomach upset, but generally, when given with a full meal, most are well tolerated. Depends on the dog. Dr. Andy
