Question

The front burner on my gas grill (Weber) lights with a very low flame. The back burner works great, but will not light until propane builds up enough to light from the small flame on the front burner (probably not a good idea). I have taken the grill apart twice, cleaned everything, bug screens, everything, and it just won't troubleshoot. Any ideas? Are there guys who fix these things?

Answer

Thank you for using Just Answer!

Since you have taken the grill apart and cleaned everything more than once that eliminates many of the usual causes of low flow. It is possible that the tiny holes in the grill burner are clogged or rusted and if that is the case, it should be replaced.

Another possibility is that the regulator on the propane tank is failing or there is a minor leak. The regulator determines the amount of gas pressure that is delivered to the grill. If this pressure is lower than necessary, it could result in having a low flame to some of the burners.

If it was the regulator - which feeds the front burner - was going bad, why would the back burner work fine. I hear the gas flow when I turn on the rear burner, but I don't hear the gas flow to the front burner. I think you are on to something with the front burner needing to be replaced or - at the very least - cleaned. I should probably tell you that my son let it run out of gas after he was done using it, and the owner's manual talks about something called the excess flow safety device. But I did everything to reset the device from the manual. So, you think replacing the front burner is the answer?

Accepted Answer

If you do not hear gas flow to the front burner then there must be an obstruction somewhere in the tube or the burner itself. You can test the burner by removing it and running a garden hose through the inlet tube. If water sprays out of the burner holes evenly then it is in working condition. If the holes are rusted or clogged, then water will not spray out of the holes steadily. This will help you determine whether or not the burner needs to be replaced.
