Question

My 14 year old basset hound seems to be in a great deal of pain and doesn't seem to have total control of her hind legs. Her spine seems to have a bump on it half way along and her back legs move in a wobbly bow legged way. She has thrown her back out before but her symptoms presented differently. I have a few questions ... Should I take her to an emergency vet or wait it out for a few days? Can I give her tylenol? I also have heard about a chiropractor (not open til Monday) in town who has had positive results manipulating animals - which would you recommend doing first? Is there anything else I can do for her between now and then?

Hi Robin,

If your older dog is in a great deal of pain, and is having trouble with her hind legs, yes, it would be best to have her evaluated in person, now, by a vet at an ER vet center.

If she's had back problems before, and you notice a bump on her spine now, plus, this breed is more prone to back problems, due to their short legs, having her seen as soon as possible, is your best course of action.

No, do not give her Tylenol, as this is toxic for dogs, but at this time I would definitely get her to the ER vet for a definite diagnosis and treatment of her pain so she's feeling more comfortable, as soon as possible.

Weakness in the hind legs can also be a symptom of diabetes or a cardiac condition called cardiomyopathy, which older dogs are more prone to develop.

Having a veterinary chiropractor help your dog's back problem would only be recommended if your vet agrees this would be helpful, knowing her medical history.

I hope all will be well with your dog.
