Optional Information

Year: 2001
Make: Hyundai
Model: Elantra
Engine: 4.0

Already Tried:
I have replaced the radiator, therm, therm housing, gasket, hoses. The car still over heats slightly and the temp gauge goes above the mid point and then comes down. Then the AC cuts off until it comes back to below middle.

Answer

Hi! There The water pump is on the front of the motor. You must remove the timing cover to get to it. Lee

But.. would this be the problem? I have replaced the radi, therm, therm housing, gasket, hoses. I never had a problem with it over heating before the radi had a crack in it. The crack was at the top by the cap and about an inch long. It never went above the mid point on the gauge.

Answer

Yes! It could. When does it overheat? at idle or while you are moving? Lee

Only when it has been driven around for a bit.. maybe 5 minutes.. when it is idle, it doesn't go up. I have to get it to 3000 rpm for a bit for it to go up. Once I let it idle for about 30 seconds... it then goes back to below mid point on the gauge and the ac will kick back on... I'm going crazy. I have bled all the air out of the new radiator and hoses. The fans kick on just fine.

Answer

That sounds like a flow problem. Yes it could be a water pump. Was it doing this before the rad problem? Lee

Nope. Never over heated before except about 5 years ago when I replaced the therm the first time. I've never really had problems with my car except for minor maint things. Changed the Alt about 6 months ago. The car is a 2001 and this is the first time I've had problems.

Answer

If it wasn't overheating before the rad. and now it is overheating then either the rad. is stop up. are an intallation problem. Lee

It only overheated when the radi cracked on the top by the cap. And then I replaced the radiator with a new one. So would it mean that if it never overheated before, it probably isn't the water pump? I have never heard of a radi being stopped up when it is brand new.. but the whole fact that it keeps going above the mid point is driving me bonkers! How would I even check a intallation problem?

Accepted Answer

No the water pump it not your problem. If it overheated before the rad. was replaced. have it checked for a head gasket problem. But I still say the water is not flowing right. There is a restiction. in other words the water flows good enough at idle but when it has to flow more and faster it is not so it starts to overheat. come to a idle and it flow good enough cool's down. Water is not flowing fast enough to keep it cool when going down the road. that is a sign of a flow problem. but it only started ofter the rad. was done then either the new rad. has a problem or something happened on installation to restict the flow. Thank you so much!! I really did not look forward to replacing the water pump! Cool I will check the therm again and then maybe just flush the new radi and see if that will help. I can only think that maybe I will need to check the therm housing again....
