Answer

Hello;

Thank you for writing in today.

At this point, I would recommend a tetanus shot. If he hasn't had one in the last 10 years or does not remember, a tetanus vaccine would be best. Tetanus is naturally occurring in the environment, which is why a tetanus vaccine is so important.

I would recommend possibly visiting an Urgent Care clinic. Most are equipped to provide a tetanus vaccine. In addition, they can dress the area.

At home, you will want to keep the area clean, dry, and covered until healed. You may also want to consider an over the counter antibiotic ointment.

I hope this helps. If you have any additional questions or concerns, please let me know.

I know that it's been in the last 10 yrs. Is that how long they are good for?

Accepted Answer

Hello;

Thank you for responding.

Yes, within the last 10 years is fine. In fact, tetanus immunity may last a bit longer than 10 years in some patients, but 10 years is the practice standard for recommending a booster. He should be fine. Therefore, just keep it clean, dry, and covered. As I mentioned, possibly consider some antibiotic ointment. Also, if he develops any infection, please see a provider.

I hope this helps.
