Info Request

OK,

I have a few questions I need you to answer in order to clarify the options for your solution.

1. When you say the same copy of windows on both computers, do you mean the same version as in both are XP Home or literally the same copy?

2. "Microsoft says xp is corrupted"? Is there a specific error message? Does it have a message number or error number?

3. When you say install Quest, what are you trying to "install"? Are you talking about the cabling, some disk they gave you or something else entirely?

4. Pings are two way, when you say that you get a ping but they don't ping back, this doesn't make sense from a tech point of view, please expand on this so I can figure out what you mean.

Thanks in advance for the additional info,

i loaded xp in both computers from the same disc. microsoft says some network files must be corrupted on my computer because the software i got from qwest will not load.it is called quick connect and it installs the modem and dsl software for my qwest service. qwest can ping me but they say my computer does not answer them back. i get an error code , qc4010 when i try to load the qwest software

Hello again Janis,

Although I've never worked on Quests netowrks personally it seems from the few minutes of digging I've done that they have rather antiquated equipment and frankly a overly complicated process for getting connected.

That said one of two things is likely wrong;

1. Your DSL modem can only hold one address at a time, this means when you want to use more than one computer you will either need a router connected to the modem or each time you hook up a new computer you will need to reset the modem(generally done by holding the reset button on the back down until you see a red flashing light on the front).

2. They require some settings that your computer is not compatible with to operate.

Step one, reset the modem while it's connected to the computer that is having trouble, then run the setup. If it works you will need a router to make both work at the same time. If it doesn't work then your problem is with Quests software not being compatible to your computer or at least requiring a little more finesse to install. The person you spoke to the 1st time is likely a tier 1 technician(think 1st year apprentice mechanic), they have 2-4 weeks of training and don't get paid enough to care about your problem. Ask to speak to a tier 2 technician right off the batt and you should be transfered to someone with 3-4 months of training(think 4th year mechanics apprentice), tell that person the steps you have taken from my advise and they should be able to work through it. If they can't they should pass you to a tier 3 tech(an engineer at my level hopefully, with knowledge of their network, think journeyman), this tech should be able to resolve you issue. If this doesn't work report back with all the tech talk they give you and I should be able to advise you further.
