Question

My female chinchilla has a clear, non odorous wetness in the genital area. I think she may be pregnant. Is this something that needs to be checked by a vet?

Info Request

Hello,

I'm sorry to see that no one has responded to your question earlier. Different experts come online at various times; I just came online and saw your question. If you still need help, some additional information will be useful.

When was your chinchilla bred?

Is she eating and behaving normally?

How long has she had this discharge?

Thank you.

I bought her out of a breeding cage at a local pet store. I counted that 111 days from when I bought her would be early November. She is lethargic, but she has never been very active because she was apparently raised in a small cage. She is acive enough to try to avoid being caught, but not enough that I can't catch her. I noticed the discharge about 5 days ago. A friend who raises chins told me it was normal. Then last night, she said it might be an infection. The hair that was affected is now white and stiff. The anal area is wet this afternoon. She is a solid black chin.

Thank you.

Thank you for getting back to me. You shouldn't see a discharge this early in the pregnancy. The amniotic fluid is usually released just a few hours before the birth of the young. Since it sounds like the discharge is white when it dries, and may be coming from both the anus and vagina, there is a problem. An infection is the most likely possibility. There won't be anything you can do on your own - you'll need to see a vet. Here is a link to a list of vets who are experienced with chinchillas:

A normal chinchilla birth doesn't take very long and proceeds uneventfully. you can read more about breeding and what to expect during the birth process here:

I will be out of town Monday. Do you think I need to get help today on an emergency basis?

Answer

You'll have to make a judgement call on that, since you can observe the chicnhilla directly. If she's very lethargic, not eating well, not drinking,or seems to be in any type of distress, I would see an emergecny vet. Once such symptoms develop, a chinchilla can deteriorate quickly. If the only symptom is the discharge, you can probably wait.
