Question

My 7 year old Maltese/Poodle mix went to the groomers today where she has been going every 6 weeks since she was a puppy. The groomer routinely expresses her glands and she always seems sensitive in her anal area when we pick her up from the groomer. Today, however, she is obviously in severe pain in her anal area and cannot/will not stand long enough to even go potty. The few seconds she attempts to stand/walk she is jerky and wants to lay down. She seems to be getting worse as the evening wears on. Although it is not hot temperature wise she is panting as if it is. I will take her to our vet on Monday but am concerned that I should instead take her to a 24 hour facility rather than wait through the weekend. Can you please advise if this sounds like a life threatening condition and if there is anything that I should/could be doing to help her? Thank you.

Hello,

I'm sorry your dog is feeling so uncomfortable.

I do think this warrants a visit to the 24 hour vet center and I would not recommend waiting until Monday to have your dog evaluated.

She may have infected or impacted anal glands, and this is causing her current symptoms and discomfort. The groomer also may have been 'overzealous' in expressing her anal glands this time and this is contributing to her discomfort, hind leg weakness and inability to stand.

I hope all will be well with your furry girl, once she is treated by the vet.
